Municipal Council
on Jan 27

I have been a resident of Sioux Lookout for the last 13 years and I feel that I have a lot to offer the Municipality as a Councilor. I am certain that managing the changes that the town will be facing over the next 5 - 10 years will be crucial. I am excited to work with the other Municipal Councilors in whatever capacity I would be most useful.

Why am I Running?.

I think that as a resident here that I have a duty to do what I can to help. Over the last few years, I have become increasingly involved with people and business in the town. I have met great people in Sioux Lookout and have attended a number of Municipal Council meetings and Municipal Business Development meetings. I have recently been appointed to the Municipal Economic Development Committee . I feel that my perspective and ability to communicate in a team atmosphere will be an asset to the Municipality and Council.

Where is the Town Heading?.

I believe that Sioux Lookout has truly been the Hub of the North since its incorporation in 1912. As things move forward with projects such as the Watay Power Project, the potential for the Ring of Fire, other Mining Projects, Trans Load opportunities and increased Travel, Sioux Lookout will face significant opportunity and challenges.

Important Issues.

Obviously, I want to hear from YOU, I encourage you to send your thoughts to me at Councillor@NicholasCostello.com . I believe that my job will be to communicate your ideas to the rest of the Council and the Council's thoughts to you. GET INVOLVED!! But in the meantime, until I can hear from you about what you are thinking, I have a few things that I believe are important to our success as a Municipality. I will discuss some of these in the following posts.

Housing.

Housing in Sioux Lookout is one of the most important issues that we are facing. The shortage of affordable housing is stunting the municipality's ability to develop and results in a low tax base. Tax rate is a hot button topic and is very complicated. There are no overnight solutions. One of the ways that we can balance the tax rate in Sioux Lookout is to increase the tax base. I would support sustainable housing projects in Sioux Lookout and the application for more Crown Land to be incorporated within the Municipality.

Local Business.

Sioux Lookout is a unique town that is both beautiful and unspoiled. There has been a decrease in local storefront over the last 8 - 10 years. This may be in part due to the increase uptake of Internet Retailers. I believe that zoning, promoting the towns high service requirements, tourism and actively promoting the town to outside investors that we can develop symbiotic relationships with will strengthen our commercial sector. Changes to the way people buy products has changed and we need to change with it.

Sustained and Planned Development

I truly believe that Sioux Lookout is going to be at the center of a major Economic Boom occurring in Northwestern Ontario. The opportunities that will present themselves over the next few years will be Fast and Furious. I would like to be an advocate within the Council for a plan to make these opportunites sustainable. It is of the utmost importance that the Municipality is prepared for the level of development that will occur during this Boom. The goal and agreements that are made during this time must include the long term goals of the Municipality and its residents.
